Collagen Injection
What Is It?
Collagen injection is the shared name for injections that aim to support the collagen structure of the skin. It is not the brand of a single product. Two separate approaches work under this heading. I compare the cells that repair the skin to bricklayers. One approach is to hand these bricklayers the building blocks of collagen directly, a bit like saying “here is the brick, here is the cement, build the wall with these”. The other is to give the bricklayers a nudge, so that the skin steps up its own collagen production. We decide which one to use during the examination, based on your skin age, tissue thickness and expectations.
Collagen is the supporting framework of the skin. From the late twenties onwards it decreases a little every year. You feel this first in elasticity. The skin no longer bounces back as it used to, a fine slackness starts at the surface, and lines stay visible even when your face is at rest. With this treatment we aim to support collagen production. It does not reverse the decline itself.
How Is It Done?
Here it matters to put the right name to the problem. First we look at skin thickness, elasticity and the depth of the lines. We work out whether the complaint comes from tissue quality or from volume loss. That distinction decides the product, because you cannot answer volume loss with collagen support.
We deliver the product with a fine needle into the middle layer of the skin, through points spread across the area. Besides the face, we can also treat the neck, décolleté and the backs of the hands. We use a topical anaesthetic cream beforehand, and the procedure takes about 15-20 minutes. The number of sessions depends on the product. We usually plan 1-2 sessions and repeat them after an interval if needed.
Who Is It For?
It suits patients whose skin has started to lose elasticity, no longer recovers at the surface as it used to, and whose fine lines are becoming more visible. It comes up more often from the mid-thirties onwards. Sun damage and smoking bring this picture forward.
In someone with marked sagging and volume loss it is not enough on its own; there, collagen support becomes one part of the plan. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, active infection in the area, bleeding disorders, uncontrolled autoimmune disease and known allergy to the product change the plan. If you have a tendency to keloid (excessive scarring), we review the treatment plan accordingly.
Process & Recovery
Skin assessment
We note elasticity, skin thickness and the depth of the lines. We work out whether the complaint comes from tissue quality or from volume loss. The product and session plan are set at this stage.
Treatment day
After a topical anaesthetic cream, we deliver the product into the middle layer of the skin through points spread across the area. The procedure takes 15-20 minutes.
First 48 hours
There is redness and tenderness at the entry points, and small bruises may appear. You postpone sauna, steam rooms and strenuous exercise, and we ask you to protect your skin from the sun.
Weeks 4-6
Collagen support works slowly. You usually see the first difference in this window, in how the skin recovers and how smooth the surface is.
Review
At the review we look at the response. If a second session is needed, we plan it from here and set the repeat interval.
Results & Duration
Collagen support works at a slow pace. Do not expect any plumpness straight after the treatment. The change is usually noticed after the fourth week and builds up over the following months. So we assess the result at the second month; looking in the mirror in the first week is misleading.
Duration varies with the person, the product and the starting condition of the skin; the generally reported range is around 12 months. Because collagen production keeps decreasing with age, the effect recedes over time. We set the repeat interval at the review.
What Is Not Promised
Collagen injection does not take the place of filler. It does not add volume to areas such as the cheekbones, chin or lips, and it does not change facial proportions. It does not tighten sagging skin and does not replace surgical lifting.
It does not erase deep expression lines and has no lightening effect on pigmentation. We cannot promise a particular appearance, speed or duration. The skin responds as far as its own production capacity allows, and that capacity varies from person to person.
Key Benefits
- Elasticity support
- Firm tissue
- Skin quality
“Collagen is a protein, and that is easy to forget. In the three months after the treatment, your skin needs amino acids while it produces that protein. If you eat plenty of vitamin C and protein, you will get a better result.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Is collagen injection a single product?
No, it is a treatment heading. Some products deliver the building blocks of collagen directly, others stimulate the skin’s own production. We make the choice during the examination, based on your skin age and expectations.
How does it differ from the youth injection?
Their targets are different. The youth injection works mainly through hydration and the skin’s capacity to hold water, and its effect is felt sooner. Collagen support targets the structural side and builds up over weeks.
When will I see the result?
Usually after the fourth week. It keeps developing over the following months, and we do not judge it by the first week.
How many sessions are needed?
It depends on the product; we usually plan 1-2 sessions. If needed, we repeat them after an interval.
How long does it last?
The generally reported range is around 12 months. Because collagen loss continues with age, the effect recedes over time; we set the repeat interval at the review.
Can it be used outside the face?
Yes. The neck, décolleté and backs of the hands are the areas we add most often. The skin is thinner there, so we assess the product and technique separately.
Can I return to daily life afterwards?
Yes, the same day. There may be redness and tenderness at the entry points; postpone sauna and strenuous exercise for two days.
Will it correct my sagging?
No. Sagging is a separate matter, and collagen support deals with tissue quality. If there is sagging, we discuss the right method separately during the examination.
