Double Chin Dissolving

Duration20 min EffectLong-lasting Sessions2-4 session(s)

What Is It?

Double chin dissolving is a non-surgical slimming treatment, done with injections, that targets localised fat under the chin. The lipolytic solution we inject into the area disrupts the membrane of the fat cell. The body then clears the released fat through its own elimination pathways over the following weeks.

A double chin can have more than one cause. If fat has really built up there, this treatment works. But this area also holds structures that already have a volume of their own, such as the lymph nodes, the root of the tongue and the hyoid bone. In some of my patients the main cause is loose skin, in others a chin that sits too far back, or slack muscles in the floor of the mouth. Whether the treatment will work depends on where the fullness comes from. We make this distinction at the consultation.

How Is It Done?

At the consultation we examine the area under the chin by hand. We look at the thickness of the fat, skin elasticity and the angle between the chin and the neck, and we take a profile photograph. If the fullness is mainly due to something other than fat, I tell you from the start.

We mark the treatment area. We inject the solution into the fat layer under the skin through evenly spaced points. We may apply a topical anaesthetic cream beforehand. A session takes 15-20 minutes on average. We usually plan the sessions 3-4 weeks apart, with 2-4 sessions in total. We reassess the number according to how the area responds.

Who Is It For?

It suits patients with a limited amount of fat under the chin that can be felt by hand, whose skin has kept its elasticity, and who do not want surgery. People often imagine “one injection here and, poof, all the fat will be gone”. Unfortunately it does not work like that, and it does not count as a weight-loss method either. It gives clearer results in people who say “I’ve lost weight and lost weight, but my double chin is still there”, in other words where the localised fullness persists regardless of overall weight.

It does not meet the expectation in people with marked skin sagging, or where the fullness comes mainly from a chin that sits too far back. We do not perform it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if there is active infection or an open wound on the skin in the area, or in people with a bleeding disorder, uncontrolled thyroid disease or difficulty swallowing. If you take any medication, we include it in the assessment, along with any systemic conditions.

Process & Recovery

  1. Examination

We assess the fat tissue, skin elasticity and the chin-neck angle, and take a profile photograph. We plan the number of sessions and the interval between them on the basis of this assessment.

  2. Session day

We cleanse and mark the area and apply a topical anaesthetic cream if needed. We give the injections through evenly spaced points; a session takes 15-20 minutes on average.

  3. First 3-5 days

Swelling, tenderness, a stinging sensation and firmness occur in the area. These are the expected response to the treatment. Swelling is most noticeable in the first 48 hours and goes down within a few days. Bruising may occur.

  4. Weeks 2-4

The clearance of the broken-down fat continues, the firmness resolves and the area softens. The slimming starts to become noticeable during this period.

  5. Interval and assessment

We plan the next session 3-4 weeks later. We assess the overall result by comparing photographs about a month after the planned sessions are finished.

Results & Duration

The effect builds up gradually across the sessions. The first difference usually becomes clear after the second session. We make the final assessment about a month after the protocol is finished.

The broken-down fat cells leave the area. The cells that remain, however, can grow again if you gain weight, so keeping the result depends on your weight staying stable. How many sessions you will need and how much slimming can be achieved depend on the amount of fat in the area and on skin elasticity.

What Is Not Promised

Double chin dissolving does not count as a slimming method. It has no effect on overall weight and does not replace a diet. It does not tighten sagging skin, does not change the structure of the chin, and does not correct laxity in the neck muscles.

We do not promise a particular number of sessions, a particular amount of slimming or how long the result will last. I tell you from the start that the area can fill out again if you gain weight. If the fullness does not come from fat tissue, I do not recommend the procedure.

Key Benefits

  • Sharp contours
  • Non-surgical solution
  • Localised slimming

“With a double chin, the first thing that comes to everyone’s mind is fat, yet not everyone has fat there. If the chin sits a little too far back, the structures there practically start shouting “here I am”. Then dissolving does not help, and we talk about the chin.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is double chin dissolving surgery?

No. There is no incision; it is a non-surgical treatment done with injections. You go back to your daily routine the same day.

How many sessions are needed?

Usually 2-4 sessions, 3-4 weeks apart. We decide the exact number based on the amount of fat in the area and the response we get.

How long does a session take?

A session takes 15-20 minutes on average.

Is it painful, and will there be swelling?

You feel stinging and burning, and we use a topical anaesthetic cream if needed. Afterwards, marked swelling in the first 48 hours and tenderness and firmness lasting a few days are expected.

When will I notice a difference?

The slimming starts to be noticeable from weeks 2-4 and usually becomes clear after the second session. We make the final assessment a month after the protocol ends.

Will the fat come back?

If you gain weight, the area can fill out again. The broken-down cells leave the area, but the remaining cells can grow again with weight gain. Keeping the result depends on your weight staying stable.

Will it help me lose weight?

No. It is a localised treatment with no effect on overall weight, and we do not use it as a weight-loss method.

Who is it not suitable for?

We do not perform it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if there is active infection or an open wound in the area, or in people with a bleeding disorder, uncontrolled thyroid disease or difficulty swallowing. We assess suitability at the consultation.
